This 2018 album celebrates the world’s crossroads cities, where long-term residents and immigrants mingle their traditions and new styles emerge. Today especially, we need to remember that creativity arises not by building walls, but through sharing our worlds. Mazurka from Fort-de-France, mambo and danzón from Havana, cumbia from Bogotá, Balkan lesno and cocek from Sofia, tsamikos from Athens, and the psychedelic salsa of 1960s San Francisco all share the stage.
The Sextet is Anna Patton, clarinet; Don Anderson, trumpet; Eugene Uman, piano; Wes Brown, bass; Ben James, drum set; and Julian Gerstin, percussion and composer. Also with Carl Clements, flute; Jon Weeks, saxophone; John Wheeler, trombone; Lissa Scneckenburger, violin; Keith Murphy, guitar; Matt “Max” Fass, accordion; Todd Roach, Middle Eastern percussion.
